XAUUSD Gold Trading: Best Sessions, Kill Zones, and ICT Setups

How gold behaves in the Asian, London and New York sessions, which Kill Zones matter most and which ICT setups fit each window.

LSG Club · · 7 min read

XAUUSD gold trading is a session game: gold often builds its range in Asia, makes its first real move in London and delivers its largest expansion or reversal in the New York morning around US data. The best sessions for most ICT traders are London and the New York AM Kill Zone, and each one favours a different setup. This guide walks through gold’s day session by session and shows how to track it in a free ICT trading journal from LSG Club.

Why sessions matter more on gold

Gold is a global market with no single home exchange, so who is trading changes sharply through the day. Asian physical demand, London’s bullion market and US futures and data each leave their mark at different hours. The same chart pattern can mean very different things at 03:00 and at 21:00 New York time.

Gold is also quoted in US dollars and reacts strongly to US releases, Federal Reserve decisions and moves in Treasury yields. Much of its daily range is therefore concentrated in the hours when US information arrives. Because the price level is in the thousands of dollars per ounce, measure ranges with the average true range (ATR) or in percent, not in fixed dollar amounts that go out of date quickly.

XAUUSD trading sessions and Kill Zones

Times below use ICT’s convention, New York local time. The LSG journal uses the same New York-time Kill Zones, so in UTC they move by an hour when US daylight saving changes (London 06:00–09:00 UTC in summer, 07:00–10:00 in winter); keep the same clock in both your plan and your review.

The same windows apply to gold; convert them once into your own time zone.
  • Asian session — evening in New York; the Asian Kill Zone runs 20:00–00:00. Gold usually ranges, but can move on Chinese or Japanese news.
  • London session — the London Kill Zone runs 02:00–05:00. The first raid on the Asian range often happens here.
  • New York session — the New York AM Kill Zone runs 07:00–10:00 and includes the 08:30 data releases; the US equity open follows at 09:30.
  • London close and the afternoon — London winds down from about 10:00 to 12:00; the New York afternoon is usually thinner, except on Federal Reserve days.

Gold in the Asian session

For most of the Asian Kill Zone gold trades in a narrower range than in London or New York. That range is the useful output of the session: the high and low with stops resting above and below become the liquidity London is likely to target. Mark them every day before you sleep or before London opens.

Asia is not always quiet. Chinese data, comments from Asian central banks or a weekend headline digested at the Sunday open can move gold here. If the Asian range is already wide relative to the daily ATR, a large part of the day’s typical movement may be spent, and London setups need more room. Most ICT traders treat the session as preparation rather than a time to trade.

Gold in the London session

London is where gold usually wakes up. The classic sequence is a run on one side of the Asian range, often against the daily bias, followed by a reversal and expansion in the real direction. That false move is the Judas swing of the Power of 3 daily cycle. On many days the London Kill Zone sets the high or low of the day.

The London bullion market also runs the LBMA gold price auctions at 10:30 and 15:00 London time. Price can react around those fixes, so note them on your chart rather than being surprised by a sudden burst of activity outside the Kill Zone.

Gold in the New York session

The 08:30 data window

Most high-impact US releases, such as jobs, inflation and retail sales, come out at 08:30 New York time, inside the New York AM Kill Zone. Gold can cover several times its usual hourly range within minutes, often running stops on both sides before choosing a direction. The spread widens around the release. A practical rule is to wait for the release candle to close and for structure to form before reading any setup.

The equity open and the Silver Bullet hour

The US equity open at 09:30 adds a second wave of activity. The highs and lows made between 08:30 and 10:00 then become liquidity for the 10:00–11:00 Silver Bullet window, when gold often retraces into a fresh fair value gap before continuing. On days when London already made a large move, New York frequently either continues it after a pullback or reverses it once the London target has been reached.

The afternoon and Fed days

After London closes, gold’s activity usually fades into the afternoon. The exception is a Federal Reserve decision: the statement at 14:00 New York time and the press conference that follows can produce the largest move of the week. Treat those afternoons as news events with their own rules, not as ordinary sessions.

ICT setups that fit each gold session

London: the Asian range raid

With a bias set on the daily and 4-hour charts, wait for London to take the side of the Asian range that opposes your bias. Then look for a market structure shift with displacement in the bias direction and enter on the retracement into the fair value gap or order block that move created. The stop goes beyond the raid extreme, and the first target is the opposite side of the Asian range.

New York: continuation after a pullback

If London moved in the bias direction and has not reached the draw on liquidity, New York often pulls back first. Look for the pullback to reach discount (for longs) or premium (for shorts) of the London leg, ideally inside the OTE zone of 62–79%, and for a lower-timeframe shift back in the London direction. The target is the draw left unreached.

New York: reversal after the data spike

When the 08:30 release spikes gold into an obvious level, such as the previous day high or a 4-hour fair value gap, and price then fails and breaks structure the other way, the spike has become a liquidity sweep. Enter on the retrace after the shift, never into the spike itself, and accept that the stop has to clear the spike extreme.

Bias, position sizing and news handling for gold are covered step by step in the guide on how to trade XAUUSD with ICT concepts.

Measuring gold’s session ranges yourself

Instead of relying on someone else’s numbers, measure what gold does in your sessions. For a few weeks, record each session’s high-to-low range as a fraction of the daily ATR, which session made the high and which made the low, and whether London’s direction held through New York. Patterns appear quickly, and they adjust automatically as the price level and volatility change. Trading gold carries real risk, and those measurements describe tendencies, not certainties.

Session mistakes on XAUUSD

  • Trading the Asian range from the middle — there is no edge inside a range whose edges are the liquidity.
  • Entering on the London breakout — on many days the first break of the Asian range is the false move.
  • Holding through 08:30 without a plan — decide before the session whether you exit, reduce size or keep the position.
  • Using stops sized for a quiet session in a busy one — size stops relative to the session’s typical range, then size the position from the stop.
  • Copying fixed dollar ranges from old articles — gold’s price level has changed, and so has the size of a normal move.

FAQ

What is the best time to trade XAUUSD?

For most ICT traders it is the London Kill Zone (02:00–05:00 New York time) and the New York AM Kill Zone (07:00–10:00 New York time). London often sets the high or low of the day, and New York brings US data and the equity open. Your own journal should confirm which of the two suits you.

Is the Asian session good for trading gold?

Usually it is better for preparation than for trading. Gold tends to range in Asia, and the range’s high and low become targets later. Traders who live in Asian time zones can trade it, but they should expect smaller moves on most days.

Why does gold move so much at 08:30 New York time?

That is when most major US economic data is released. Gold is priced in dollars and is sensitive to interest-rate expectations, so jobs and inflation numbers can reprice it within minutes. Spreads widen as well, which is why many traders wait for the release candle to close.

Should I trade gold on Fed decision days?

Only with a separate plan. The 14:00 statement and the press conference can move gold sharply in both directions within the same hour. Many traders flatten positions before the decision and trade only once structure has formed afterwards.
