Tokyo hours on a New York clock
The Tokyo Stock Exchange trades in two sessions, 09:00–11:30 and 12:30–15:30 Japan time; the afternoon was extended from 15:00 to 15:30 on 5 November 2024. Japan Standard Time is UTC+9 all year — Japan has no daylight saving — so only the US clock change moves these hours on a New York clock: the cash open is at 20:00 New York in the US summer and 19:00 in the US winter, on the evening before the Japanese trading day. Nikkei futures trade far longer, on the Osaka Exchange in a day session of 08:45–15:45 and a night session of 17:00–06:00 Japan time, and on CME in Chicago. Most NIKKEI CFDs follow the futures.
| Window | New York time | What usually happens |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo cash open | 20:00 (US summer) / 19:00 (US winter) | 09:00 Japan time, the evening before in New York |
| Asian Kill Zone | 20:00–00:00 | Tokyo's morning session; usually the most active cash hours |
| Tokyo lunch break | 22:30–23:30 (US summer) / 21:30–22:30 (US winter) | 11:30–12:30 Japan time; cash pauses, futures keep trading |
| BoJ decision days | No fixed time | Announced right after the two-day meeting ends; the hour varies |
| Tokyo cash close | 02:30 (US summer) / 01:30 (US winter) | 15:30 Japan time since 5 November 2024 |
| London Kill Zone | 02:00–05:00 | Tokyo is closed; futures follow Europe and the yen |
| New York AM Kill Zone | 07:00–10:00 | US data at 08:30 and the 09:30 US open move the futures |
| London Close Kill Zone | 10:00–12:00 | Wall Street sets the tone for the next Tokyo open |
Bank of Japan and the yen calendar
- Bank of Japan decision — eight meetings a year, two days each; announced right after the meeting ends, with no fixed time.
- Japan's CPI — 08:30 Tokyo; the earlier Tokyo figure is read as a preview.
- US CPI and the jobs report at 08:30 New York — 21:30 or 22:30 in Tokyo, when the cash market is closed, so the reaction shows up in the futures and at the next open.
What drives the Nikkei
The Nikkei 225 is price-weighted: a stock's influence depends on its share price, not on the size of the company, so a handful of high-priced shares can move the whole index. Many members are exporters, and a weaker yen has often lifted their profits in yen terms, which is why the index frequently moves opposite to the yen. Bank of Japan policy, the risk of official yen intervention (Japan intervened in 2022 and 2024) and the mood on Wall Street, especially in chip stocks, complete the picture. These are relationships, not forecasts.
The Nikkei and ICT Kill Zones
For the Nikkei the Asian Kill Zone is not quiet background but the home session: Tokyo's morning sits inside it, and in the US summer the cash open coincides with its 20:00 start. ICT traders often watch how the index opens against the previous close and whether the morning session takes out the overnight high or low. After the Tokyo close the futures follow Europe and then New York, so the London and New York AM Kill Zones can reshape the range before Tokyo reopens — check the Nasdaq 100 for the US side. The session times guide covers the Asian session, the Kill Zone converter puts every window on your clock, and because the Nikkei is priced in yen, the Nikkei position size calculator converts the point value at the USDJPY rate.
Frequently asked questions
What time does the Tokyo stock market open in New York time?

Did the Tokyo trading hours change?
Yes. Since 5 November 2024 the afternoon session ends at 15:30 Japan time instead of 15:00; the lunch break from 11:30 to 12:30 is unchanged.
Does the club AI publish Nikkei levels here?
No. Only the public session text — the plan's headline and summary — appears here, after the session has opened. It is the club's AI reading of the chart, not a signal.
