When gold trades
Spot gold has no central exchange: it trades over the counter from Sunday evening to Friday 17:00 New York, and most brokers pause it for an hour from 17:00 each day. COMEX gold futures follow the same rhythm: Sunday to Friday, 18:00 to 17:00 New York, with a one-hour daily break. London is usually five hours ahead of New York; for a few weeks in March and around the end of October the two cities change their clocks on different dates and the gap shrinks to four hours, so London events land an hour later in New York time.
| Window | New York time | What usually happens |
|---|---|---|
| Asian Kill Zone | 20:00–00:00 | Thin liquidity; gold often builds a range that later sessions run |
| London Kill Zone | 02:00–05:00 | Europe arrives; the day's first real expansion often starts here |
| LBMA Gold Price, morning | 05:30 (06:30 in clock-gap weeks) | London auction at 10:30 local time, a benchmark for physical gold |
| New York AM Kill Zone | 07:00–10:00 | US data at 08:30; usually the busiest window for gold |
| LBMA Gold Price, afternoon | 10:00 (11:00 in clock-gap weeks) | Second auction at 15:00 London, as the London Close Kill Zone opens |
| London Close Kill Zone | 10:00–12:00 | London squares up; morning moves often slow down or retrace |
| COMEX settlement | 13:30 | The futures settlement price is set from trading between 13:29 and 13:30; the afternoon is usually quieter |
| Daily break | 17:00–18:00 | Futures pause and spreads widen at most brokers |
Scheduled news that moves gold
Gold is priced in US dollars, so the US calendar sets most of its scheduled volatility. In New York time:
- US CPI, the jobs report (non-farm payrolls, usually the first Friday of the month), PCE inflation, retail sales, PPI and weekly jobless claims — 08:30.
- ISM surveys and JOLTS job openings — 10:00.
- FOMC statement — 14:00, press conference at 14:30; eight meetings a year, minutes three weeks after each.
What drives the gold price
Gold pays no interest, so it competes with what money can earn elsewhere. When US real yields — bond yields after inflation — rise, holding gold costs more in lost income; when they fall, that cost shrinks. The dollar matters for the same reason it matters for any dollar-priced commodity. On top of that sit safe-haven demand when markets are stressed, central-bank reserve purchases and physical demand for jewellery and bars, much of it in Asia. None of these is a timing tool: they explain why gold reacts to a CPI print or an FOMC statement, not which way it goes next.
How ICT traders read gold's sessions
Most ICT traders treat the Asian session as context rather than a place to trade. They mark the Asian range, watch whether the London Kill Zone takes one side of it — often the false move ICT calls the Judas swing — and expect the main move in the New York AM Kill Zone around the 08:30 data. The 10:00–11:00 hour is ICT's AM Silver Bullet window. Gold's daily range is wide, so stops are measured in dollars rather than pips; work out the lot with the gold position size calculator first. The Kill Zone converter shows every window on your own clock, and gold trading sessions and how to trade XAUUSD with ICT go deeper. Silver keeps similar hours — see silver today.
Frequently asked questions
What time does the New York session open for gold?
Gold has no single open — it trades nearly 24 hours. For ICT traders the New York AM Kill Zone runs 07:00–10:00 New York time, the main US data comes at 08:30 and the US stock market opens at 09:30. The widget shows these windows in your own time zone.
Does the club AI publish gold levels here?
No. This page shows only the public session text — the plan's headline and summary — after the session has opened. It is the club's AI reading of the chart, not a signal, and it contains no levels.
Why do the LBMA auction times move in New York time?
The auctions are fixed in London time, at 10:30 and 15:00. London is usually five hours ahead of New York, but for a few weeks a year the two cities change clocks on different dates, the gap is four hours, and the auctions land an hour later on a New York clock.
When is gold usually quietest?
In the Asian hours and in the New York afternoon after the London Close Kill Zone ends at 12:00, up to the daily futures break at 17:00. US holidays thin the market as well.
